Contributions– How to Submit?

Public History Weekly is an open peer review journal that thrives on the diversity of its renowned and acknowledged authors’ voices and opinions. Essentially, any kind of contribution to the public debate on “History” hosted here is welcome. We accept multilingual contributions in English and any language being used by our core authors. Please note our editorial guidelines for details.

A. Contributions to Monthly Issues

Public History Weekly (PHW) is a collaborative journal which is based on the principle of subsidiarity.

Each month, a team of editors-in-charge consisting of two members of the PHW Executive Board is autonomously responsible for developing the thematic focus and selecting the contributions for their editorial month. The topics are always planned a year in advance, and the schedule is displayed on the website (see below). The monthly editors may either invite contributions, or open a call for articles.

The contributions are published weekly on Thursdays, 8 a.m. CET.

To contribute to a monthly thematic issue, please contact in advance the editorial team responsible for the respective month (see below).

Alternatively, you can submit your article directly to the Central Editorial Office. In this case, the editor will review the submission and send it to the editors of the thematically appropriate monthly focus for further consideration and a final decision.

Current editorial schedule 2023/2024

In addition to monthly thematic editions, we publish articles on current topics which are not necessarily connected to monthly focus themes in our Speaker’s Corner section.

Experts working in the field of public history outside the academia (e.g. artists, journalists, educators, museum curators, cultural heritage operators etc.) are welcome to publish their contributions in our Wilde13 section.

Please submit your articles to the Central Editorial Office, or contact the co-editors in the PHW Executive Board.

C. Early Career

‎‎Public History Weekly opened a programme for scholars at the beginning of their careers in 2021. Doctoral candidates are invited to publish with us before completing their doctoral thesis. In doing so, we aim to maintain our high quality standards while neutralising the usual academic hierarchy.

Therefore, the selection of publications among corresponding submissions is made by two special members of the Executive Board, the two Early Career Co-directors. Submissions should be sent to them directly, either proactively or in response to a call for papers. Submissions are published at intermittent intervals in the Speaker’s Corner section and collected in the table of contents under the keyword “Early Career”.

Please submit your proposals via e-mail. Questions are welcome via Editorial Office.

D. Comments

Comments on published contributions are most welcome—true to our endeavour to encourage active and spontaneous debate and to dissolve the strict separation between authors and “consumers.” At the same time, we strive to maintain high standards for all contributions appearing in Public History Weekly. Submissions are hence subject to careful review. Comments form an integral part of the body of texts published and are archived with the original contribution.

Please note the following instructions for publishing comments: | Bitte beachten Sie folgende Hinweise für die Kommentarpublikation:

  1. Comments must be submitted by 8 p.m. (via the comment box appearing beneath the contribution) to ensure publication during the next working day (Monday – Friday) | Ihr Kommentar muss bis 8 Uhr abends abgeschickt sein (via Kommentarfenster unter dem Beitrag), um am nächsten Arbeitstag (Montag – Freitag) freigeschaltet werden zu können.
  2. No comments are published on Sundays and public holidays. Comments received on Sundays or public holidays are published the following weekday.
  3. Comments need to show an explicit engagement with the initial contribution and should be long enough to reflect serious consideration of the initial contribution. Length should not exceed 6,000 characters (all inclusive). Please also include a short title. Der Maximalumfang beträgt 6000 Zeichen (all inclusive). Bitte auch einen kurzen Titel angeben.
  4. The editors endeavour to solicit comments from proven experts in the relevant field (Open Peer Review). This policy by no means intends to inhibit or limit free comment, but instead to stimulate discussion.
  5. Clear language errors will be corrected by the responsible editor without prior consultation with the submitting author. In case of doubt, the editor will contact contributors by e-mail. This may, however, delay publication.
  6. Should a comment contain false statements of fact, the editors will contact the contributor to avoid any misunderstanding and factual errors.
  7. We welcome the greatest possible diversity of opinion. The editors reserve the right not to publish comments that contravene the principles of democracy. The editors will contact the author of any such submission with a view to avoiding any misunderstanding. This editorial policy applies equally to personal attacks that transgress the limits of animated scientific polemics.
  8. Public History Weekly is a scientific journal fully committed to the principle of clear identification (including valid network identities). Substantiated discussion presupposes a knowledge of one’s opposite number. When submitting a comment, please provide not only your e-mail address (which will not be displayed) in the comment box, but also the URL of your business or personal website. Unidentified submissions will not be published. The editors reserve the right to add relevant Internet addresses as deemed necessary.
  9. After 7–8 weeks, initial authors are invited to submit a summary response to the comments received. The discussion thread will be closed following the publication of this summary. Together, the initial contribution, comments, and summary response form a multi-perspective text, which is archived in full.

These rules are intended to maintain a spirit of foreseeable, equitable, and motivating communication between the initial authors, the editors, and commentators. Essentially, any active contribution respecting the above principles is welcome.
