Uncertainties within international relations and unsteady developments in the Middle East have caused Turkey to be concerned about it’s future. Due to these developments, the state has shown increased interest in national memory and historical heritage in order to strengthen unity in Turkish society.

Increasing Interest

The Syrian civil war, the attacks of state-supported terrorist organizations such as PKK and YPG against Turkey in the Middle East, military aid support for terrorist organizations by the U.S. and the negative effects of President Donald Trump’s tweets regarding the Turkish economy have not only been perceived as an attack in Turkish society, but for the majority of society and politicians also pose a continuous threat to the national unity in particular and to the future of Turkey in general. The Turkish administration has therefore launched a campaign of political history where not only appropriate rhetoric has been employed to empower a strong sense of identity but where also national unity has been accentuated. In this context, large scale ceremonies have been organized in places where these important historical events took place as a means to turn to national history again. Examples like the Gallipoli Campaign and the Battle of Manzikert constitute such historical events which are currently celebrated. Especially, the Battle of Manzikert has gained of great importance within the Turkish society in recent years.

2018 represents the anniversary year of 947 years of the Battle of Manzikert conquest and therefore an important turning point for the Turkish state. Reason enough to engage in varied celebrations in order to uphold the national memory. The Battle of Manzikert has been celebrated every year in Turkey until now. Top management of the state have participated in it and therefore symbolized the importance of this celebration.[1] Both, national unity and togetherness were emphasized with the importance of this specific victory in mentioned celebrations.[2] In addition to the state’s high-level administration, many political leaders issued a message at the 2018 Manzikert celebrations and with that, they engaged in a serious effort to strengthen the sense of unity within the Turkish society.[3]

The Battle of Manzikert

Alpaslan, ruler of the Seljuk Empire, defeated in the Battle of Manzikert the Empire of Byzantine, namely Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes, on the 26th of August 1071, in the Malazgirt plain, which is located in south-eastern Turkey. The number of soldiers in the army of the Byzantine Emperor was about twice the number of the Seljuk forces. This war was an important turning point that changed the fate of the Turks in the region. As a result of the war, Anatolian gates were opened to Turks and the Turks started to advance into Anatolia. Following the Battle of Manzikert, Turkish emigration to Anatolia increased and Anatolia became a Turkish homeland.[4] In addition, this victory led to the debilitation of the Byzantine Empire, one of the factors which led to the establishment of the Ottoman Empire in 1299, one of the most important Turkish Empires, which played an important role in the history of the world. The Ottoman Empire destroyed the Empire of Byzantine in 1453.[5]

In addition to the importance as a military success in Turkish history, the Battle of Manzikert constitutes a national symbol and its place in the national memory attributed to the importance of the Turkish political life during the Republican era. Especially the nationalist and conservative political parties and individuals consider this victory as a source of pride and try to transfer it to the younger generations. The Battle of Manzikert is often exploited in the political discourse and speeches of the conservatives and nationalists. This battle plays an important role in the construction of Turkish identity.

Throughout social studies and history textbooks in educational institutions it is used as an important National Memorial. The Battle of Manzikert can be found in any curriculum program ever developed throughout the last decades. History teachers in Turkey attach special importance to this battle and try to teach this historical event in an accentuated format. In other words, the Battle of Manzikert is an important element of national memorial and heritage education in history courses in Turkey.[6]

National Memory and Heritage Education

One of the main elements in shaping history education in Turkey, is the process of establishing a nation state in the early 1920s. In this period, one of the basic tasks of history education was to construct national identity and patriotism in the light of national history. The construction of Turkish national identity through history lessons was mainly achieved through memorizing political and institutional facts, which were based on important events and national memories in Turkish history. This tradition has continued to exist to a great extent until the 2000s.[7]

The process of political change, globalization and the negotiation process for Turkish membership of the European Union influenced Turkish history education perspectives. Within this development, you can see the effects of constructivist teaching in the new Turkish history curriculum. In addition, the program offered history lessons based on the evaluation of evidence and active learning. The program also recommended visits to national memorabilia and historic sites.

In 2018, new history education program came into force. When you compare the new programs with the old programs, it states the obvious: the programs especially 10th, 11th and 12th grades programs were mainly developed conceptually. Besides this, the Battle of Manzikert and the other important turning points in Turkish history are part of the new program as well as historical visits to places where important historical events took place.[8]

In short, despite globalization, technological developments and political changes in the world, history and history lessons are used as a tool to reinforce national unity in Turkey, as well as in many other countries worldwide.

Especially in difficult times for nations, historical memories and heritages are seen as a life line.
