August Ludwig Schlözer is one of the most controversial figures in Russian historical science. His scientific work is traditionally perceived mainly through the prism of the dispute of the Norman and anti-Norman, which has not been ceased until now. At the same time, Schlözer’s contribution to the development of historical knowledge is not limited solely to studies of the Russian past. Having become the most prominent representative of the Göttingen school of historians at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, August Ludwig Schlözer was at the basis of introducing such fundamental concepts as “world history”, “universal history”, “supporting historical disciplines”, and “history of mankind” into historical science. He and his colleagues at the Göttingen school made a key contribution to the process of turning history into a full-fledged branch of scientific knowledge.

In his article, Alexander S. Khodnev addresses important aspects of the scientific work of Augustus Ludwig Schlözer, taking as a basis published in the early 19-th century the first part of the fundamental work “Introduction to Universal History for Children” with a foreword by Mikhail Pogodin. The focus of attention of the author of the article is on the didactic aspect of the concept of universal history created by Schlözer, embodying the fullness of the rational philosophy of the Enlightenment.

It is noteworthy that the conclusion of Alexander S. Khodnev that the innovation of the German historian was manifested in the creation of a new type of book for children, the text of which is “filled with theoretical problems of history, in the understanding and wording as they were considered in the Enlightenment, and at the same time Schlözer was able to pose these questions in the form of “an application to the consciousness of a young child. ” The relevance of the author’s interest to one of the important components of the scientific heritage of August Ludwig Schlozer, which deserves further rethinking and discussion within the framework of a broad scientific historical discussion of the beginning of the 21-st century, seems undoubted.
