Martin Butler is Professor of American Literary and Cultural Studies and Director of the Research Centre “Genealogy of the Present” (WiZeGG) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, Germany. He is also co-speaker of the interdisciplinary PhD program “Shaping the Future: Transformation of the Present through Scenarios of Digitalization”. His research focuses on popular culture, specifically on music of protest and resistance, on audiovisual media and their representation of science, on forms and figures of cultural mobility, and on cultures of participation in new media environments.

Martin Butler ist Professor für Amerikanistik: Literatur und Kultur und Direktor des Wissenschaftlichen Zentrums “Genealogie der Gegenwart” (WiZeGG) an der Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg. Er ist zudem Ko-Sprecher des interdisziplinären Promotionsprogramms “Gestalten der Zukunft: Transformation der Gegenwart durch Szenarien der Digitalisierung” In seiner Forschung beschäftigt er sich insbesondere mit populärkulturellen Praktiken und Ausdrucksformen, dabei vor allem mit politischer Musik, mit der Darstellung von Wissenschaft und ihren Subjekten in audiovisuellen Medien (Film, Fernsehen), mit Formen und Figuren kultureller Mobilität und mit Partizipationskulturen im Kontext digitaler Medien.
