Lex McClellan-Ufugusuku is a PhD student in the History Department at the University of California Santa Cruz and serves as the policy team lead for the Okinawa Memories Initiative. She is mixed-race Shimanchu, and her work looks at the politics of formal Indigenous peoples recognition for the Shimanchu people. Her most recent work, "Between a rock and two nation-states: positing Shimanchu Indigeneity against the Futenma Replacement Facility," was published in the Avery Review in February. She is the recipient of the Thom Gentle Endowment Award for Environmental History and UCSC's Social Science Research Council Dissertation Proposal Development fellowship.
